Crafted with Passion,
a Reflection of Character

A tale of resiliance and passion that resulted in the creation of this visual oasis

Amidst the arid plains of Namibia, where the scorching sun and rugged terrain tell tales of survival, Jan and Christine Ackerman's journey emerged from necessity. Driven by a severe drought, the duo left their southern farm, seeking greener pastures for their livestock. The quest led them to a valley oasis in the Namib, its floor occasionally adorned with life-sustaining grass.

Navigating this harsh landscape took a lot of work. From leopards to hyenas, predators constantly threatened their livestock, unaccustomed to eluding such dangers. Jan spent countless hours in the wilderness to protect them, forging an unbreakable bond with the untamed land. During one of these vigilant outings, atop a mountain adorned with breathtaking vistas, Jan envisioned more than just a shelter. A rustic house emerged in his dreams, nestled amid the lofty views—a sanctuary from the temporary respite of a caravan, their abode while caring for the livestock.

The dedication behind the building of Namib's Valley of a Thousand Hills

With unwavering determination, Jan started with one unit. A testament to his vision, it stood proudly amidst the surreal landscape. As friends sought to experience the unique charm, the haven expanded, evolving into the lodge that welcomes all eager to explore this visual oasis.

Yet, building amidst the rocky expanse came with challenges. Roads, rudimentary at first, etched their way through unforgiving terrain. With the aid of an old 4x4 vehicle, Jan embarked on countless journeys, transporting every element needed for construction. From logs to timber, all materials, except the abundant rocks, were sourced from areas with a surplus, a conscious effort to preserve the limited trees in the vicinity.

The lodge grew organically, each rock and log meticulously chosen, adding character to the evolving landscape. Today, Namib's Valley of a Thousand Hills is an invitation to venture into a surreal realm. Jan and Christine, fueled by passion, invite all to share in the tranquillity and marvel at a haven crafted with enduring spirit amidst the stunning Namibian wilderness.
